Recreating the iconic model Grace Jones

I knew in 2019, one of the things I wanted to do more of as a photographer was to collaborate more with other creatives. I, like many others, constantly have these new ideas I want to reproduce and working with other experts in the field is always better than trying to produce them on your own. I always find that from doing collaborations, these creatives push me and my work further than the initial idea so when I knew I wanted to recreate the iconic Grace Jones, a collaboration was definitely a must.

“When the idea was presented to me that we are going to recreate Grace Jones it was exciting and I couldn’t wait. Now that I have seen the finish work it makes me feel like doing this again. It’s LIT!” - Lexx Brown

So when I told him about this idea, he immediately jumped on board. I didn't have to look far for an MUA either because I’d known of Krystal Major’s work for some time but again, it wasn't the right time for us to collaborate but when I reached out and proposed my thoughts on working together, she eagerly agreed. Even Ominique, after I reached out to her, said “yes,” with no hesitation.

We had an initial meeting where we put all our thoughts on paper, going back and forth almost like a fencing match until we all agreed on the final output. Lexx, our barber knew what he needed to do to achieve the right shape for her hair and Krystal and I studied the way Grace would apply her makeup and discussed how we could make it more modern while keeping close to what initially inspired the looks.

"It was an honor to have been chosen to channel iconic looks of the fashion legend Ms. Grace Jones! I'm always open to collaborating with other creative minds. Bringing the looks to life was loads of fun and I enjoyed working along with the entire team." - O Burrows

Style-wise, I just kept things simple with a few pieces I’d sourced from around town. The black gloves, big blazers, and sunglasses were all easy to obtain and were simple elements adapted from Grace Jones’ own style. I even added another element by working with Bahamian illustrator Niko Imbert who created his interpretation of the title image.

The day of the shoot was magical. The team and I set up the studio to shoot beauty but I wanted more dramatic lighting so we used two black flags to enhance the shadows on the models face. I also set up 1 large LED light with a deep parabolic umbrella for my main light. Because I’m shooting beauty I know I would want dramatic lighting on the models face and I typically don’t like cumbersome setups so I kept it simple. I was very satisfied with the results. Be sure to enjoy the images below and the behind the scenes video as well.

Bahari Season 14 Swimwear Campaign

bahariswim18_0 463.jpg

In 2014, I got an email from a new clothing brand based out of a small kiosk in Circle Mall Freeport. As with all my first-time clients, I was excited and intrigued by how this company would make a mark, or if they even would, in a then void-market for ready-to-wear Bahamian clothing. Four years, 11 Campaign Shoots, 14 Collections and 3 Stores Later; Bahari is now the country's Premiere Clothing brand. Needless to say, the pressure was on for The Season 14 Swimwear Campaign.

Anytime I shoot for Bahari, it's always a large production with many different moving parts. A production that requires a few weeks of planning and production. A location has to be found, models sourced and a style team put together. These photoshoots last 8-12 hours easily and require dedication, creativity and the will to push through until the very last shot is taken. Mentally and physically, its taxing on my team and I but the results are great.

The models were a strong lineup, diverse in size and skin tones and we were excited after seeing the sample suits that mixed with an incredibly scenic background, the shoot would be nothing short of amazing. The team was stacked, the pieces had arrived and the models were excited, certainly for a call time of 8 am, which was not so bad compared to photoshoots I'd done before with much earlier call times. The weather was proving to be perfect and the style team got to work putting the girls' faces and hair together while styling fitted the girls and accessorized them.

We shot non-stop, on a marathon of locations and spaces, poses and sessions with both still and film cameras. The team literally felt like they were on fire. We were moving constantly, changing our looks, models, suits, scenes, etc...We even made a joke because it rained twice that day and we felt it was God's way of cooling us down before we overheated.

At the end of a long day, we were exhausted but happy and feeling satisfied that this would be the best Bahari shoot to date. Please enjoy the images and the official promo video below.

Beauty Photography In A Pool

I was the first photographer to take professional images of Candice, nearly 9 years ago! A lot has changed since then. We have both grown as individuals and as creatives. Candice, undeniably so has been photographed by nearly every photographer on the island so I knew my approach had to be different, simple, easy...you know, my style! I spoke to Candice and she agreed and she became elated because we hadn't shot in such a very long time.

I wanted to keep things simple. My lighting, styling and even the models hair and makeup I wanted to keep clean and light. I wanted to put the focus on her face because she has such interesting features. She has a timeless and classic beauty reminding me of an actress from the 60s. So using my homemade scrim and a circular reflector, I was able to control the light and get great frames while shooting.

Candice was great, she knew how to angle her face so that I got the looks I had envisioned. In post after retouching, I added some Lightroom magic and it really gave the images the finishing look they needed.

Lifestyle Portraits of Artist in The Bahamas

I'm a part of an industry where there are some pretty amazing creatives, many whom I've had the pleasure to photograph. I've known illustrator and painter,  Philece for quite some time and I've always admired her creativity. Her illustrations match her personality, soft, vibrant with an energy you have to see in person to believe.

I called her and said "Philece, let's shoot!" and with little to no reluctance, she adamantly accepted my offer. I told her I wanted to shoot her in her environment, the studio, her front yard with simple styling but capturing her personality and energy.

My approach as the photographer was to capture her in bright surroundings with clean bursts of light and pops of color that would portray Philece the way I saw her. I knew many of the shots would be "in the moment" and with her quirky, awkwardly funny and an aesthetic that bleeds creativity, I knew I'd capture her candidly and create images that truly represent the artist.

Braneka Bassett photographs with Bahamian photographer Scharad Lightbourne

Braneka Bassett, a former Miss Bahamas was flying into Nassau and contacted me asking if I wanted to shoot. Braneka, being local to LA, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to work together. We had tried so many times to collaborate but due to equally busy schedules, we never got the chance until now.

"Sure!" was my response of course and I spoke to Braneka about what type of look we could shoot because we only had a few hours with her! She even had a location secured before flying in and she told me that I'd love it; a house on Lake Cunningham.

With literally an hour before sunset, an incredible suit from Beach Bunny Swimwear, and a few simple Aldo accessories, the team and I captured Braneka doing what she does best and effortlessly at that! We got great frames and everyone was excited to shoot with this Bahamian beauty.

Miss Universe Bahamas Official Photoshoot with Scharad Lightbourne

The Albany Bahamas Resort was set as the beautiful backdrop on which 10 beautiful women took their official photographs for the Miss Universe Bahamas Pageant. These lovely ladies were full of energy and laughter on set and as this production progressed, my team and I were able to get great frames from this diverse group of women.

The day was long, a production lasting over 11 hours but the ladies attitudes and personalities jumped through the camera lens. The team worked effortlessly through the blistering heat to make sure the girls were comfortable, catered to and in position to let their beauty shine through.

The makeup team, hair team and my production team all worked together, dabbing every cheek, brushing every stroke of hair and applying the best light to each contestant making sure we got the best! It was truly a fun experience for teamSL. See the FULL range of images by visiting the Miss Universe Bahamas official website.
